Come toast the new year with warm libations, enjoy a short talk in our cozy barn, and awaken our orchard in the dead of winter.

What is Wassail?

In England, wassail is an ancient winter ritual. At the darkest time of year, revelers gather in frozen orchards to scare away evil sprits and ensure a bountiful harvest in the coming year. In keeping with this custom, we’ll make some noise in Peirce Orchard, read traditional Wassail verses, and encourage our young apple trees to flourish!

Postcard Peirce Mill:  An Illustrated Talk with Local Historian John DeFerrari

Peirce Mill has now been a tourist attraction in Rock Creek Park for longer than it served as a working grist mill. At the turn of the last century, visitors reveled in its picturesque, old-timey look, and park planners designed dams, bridges, and fords to add to the romantic ambience. Using old postcards and other vintage photos, this slideshow will bring to life what a trip to Peirce Mill and Rock Creek Park was like 100 years ago.
