SUMMARY:Create by the Creek 2024
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: Because of the extreme heat forecast for Saturday\, June 22\, we are moving Create by the Creek to Peirce Barn. \nWorkshop Schedule\nMixed Media Cyanotype\nTeaching Artist: Marie B Gauthiez\nTime: 10:00 to 11:00am \nJoin Marie B Gauthiez to learn the basics of cyanotype printing\, a non-toxic photographic process using the sun’s light to capture the shadows of natural and found objects. Then we’ll build on the cyanotypes through collage\, ink\, and acrylic to create another layer of shapes.  \n\nResponding to the Landscape with Ink\nTeaching Artist: Carol Rubin\nTime: 11:30am-12:30pm \nUsing an array of water media\, we will react to the feel of plants\, trees\, sky\, and water in the park. Loose fluid materals encourage our perceptual expression of the environment through bold gestures and lines. We will experiment with India ink\, colored acrylic ink\, and ink washes\, among other materials. \n\nThe Interplay of Light\nTeaching Artist: Trevor Young\nTime: 1:00 to 2:00pm \nTaking inspiration from historical artists\, particularly Dutch and French painters\, DC artist Trevor Young will demonstrate how light transitions across various shapes in our natural environment. Participants will then use oil paint to emphasize the excitement and interplay of light. \n\nUnder Pressure: Painting in 60 Minutes\nTeaching Artist: Paul Pietsch\nTime: 2:30 to 3:30pm \nThe time to paint can be an elusive luxury. But temporal limitations can be an asset to your creative practice. In this 60-minute watercolor workshop\, we’ll shed hopes for perfection and embrace the benefits of painting with little time. \nCreate by the Creek is organized by the Friends of Peirce Mill in partnership with the National Park Service and the Washington Studio School. \n  \n \n  \n  \nThis project is supported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

The Washington Studio School will also be organizing a landscape meet-up at Peirce Mill that day.  Please click here for more information about the landscape meet-up.  \nSaturday\, June 10\, 10:00am to 4:00pm.  \nRain date:  Sunday\, June 11\, 10:00am to 4:00pm. \n\n\nWORKSHOP SCHEDULE \n\nPlease click here to register for a free workshop taught by a local artist in Rock Creek Park! \n\n\nCyanotypes at the Mill\nTeaching Artist: Luke Walter\n10:00 to 11:30am\n12:00 to 1:30pm \nA cyanotype is an early photographic process invented in 1842\, just a few years after Peirce Mill was built. In this workshop\, DC artist Luke Walter will demonstrate the cyanotype process\, and show participants how to arrange natural objects and hand-drawn images on specially prepared paper. Then we’ll use sunlight to permanently capture these otherwise ephemeral shadows in subtle shades of blue. \n\nPhotographing Rock Creek Park\nTeaching Artist: Francesca Scott\n10:00 to 11:30am\n2:00 to 3:30pm \nExplore Rock Creek Park with camera in hand\, and learn more about photography\, the creative process\, and the emotional meanings behind the images we create. Professional photographer and teacher Francesca Scott will provide technical guidance on using a smart phone or digital camera to capture the natural world. She’ll cover difficult lighting situations\, proper exposure\, depth of field\, and compositional techniques. Please note: Workshop participants are asked to bring a smart phone or digital camera. We’ll be walking and taking photographs around Peirce Mill; please wear comfortable shoes and let us know if you require any accommodations. \n\nFind Yourself in Nature\nTeaching Artist: Gabriela Méndez\n10:00 to 11:30am\n2:00 to 3:30pm \nCreate a self-portrait where body and nature are combined\, interiorizing the idea that humans\, plants\, animals\, and the environment are all connected. Artist Gabriela Méndez will lead this exploration\, which will begin by using colored pencils to draw\, trace\, or create rubbings of natural objects in Rock Creek Park. These drawings will evolve into self-portraits that express both a sense of identity and a deeper connection with nature. \n\nInking Our World\nTeaching Artist: Caroline MacKinnon\n12:00 to 1:30pm\n2:00 to 3:30pm \nInk is a versatile medium that can create both fine details and sweeping washes and stains. In this experimental and experiental workshop\, artist Caroline MacKinnon will invite participants to zoom in on tiny things – follow the ridges in a leaf\, blades of grass\, the craggy texture of a rock – as well as zoom out for a bigger picture – using different wash techniques to capture the sky\, clouds\, sunlight\, treetops and creek.  Please note: Workshop participants should wear old clothing—ink can permanently stain fabric. \n  \n\n\n\n\nCreate by the Creek is organized by the Friends of Peirce Mill in partnership with the National Park Service and the Washington Studio School. \nThis project is supported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. \n \n\nQuestions? Email Angela Kramer\, \neducation@friendsofpeircemill.org \n\n\n\n\nSAVE THE DATE! \nCreate by the Creek returns to Rock Creek Park this June!\nDate: Saturday\, June 10\, 10:00am to 4:00pm \nRain Date: Sunday\, June 11\, 10:00am to 4:00pm \n  \n  \n
