SUMMARY:William Beckett Project: Conversation and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the remarkable life of William Beckett\, who was once the enslaved manager of Joshua Peirce’s nursery business on Linnaean Hill\, now Rock Creek Park headquarters. New evidence reveals that Beckett was also Peirce’s son; his mother was an enslaved woman named Mary Beckett.  \nAfter Beckett was emancipated on April 16\, 1862\, he led a long and distinguished career as a DC business owner\, presidential coachman\, and doorkeeper at the Library of Congress. When Beckett died in 1911\, thousands crowded into his funeral at the Metropolitan AME Church on M Street NW. \nOn April 20\, we’ll share what the Friends of Peirce Mill and Rock Creek Park have learned during the William Beckett Project\, funded by Humanities DC.\n \nThe event will begin at 1:00pm with a conversation at Picnic Grove #1 in Rock Creek Park featuring Brian Joyner\, Acting Superintendent of Rock Creek Park; Dr. Elizabeth Clark-Lewis\, Professor of History at Howard University and the Director of its Public History Program; and Antonio Austin\, Project Historian for the William Beckett Project and PhD candidate at Howard University. \nThen we’ll head up to Linnaean Hill\, now known as Klingle Mansion. Visitors will have the option to walk up the hill\, or to take a free shuttle bus.  \nA new\, temporary interpretive exhibit telling Beckett’s life story will be installed near the mansion. We’ll end the afternoon with a reception and light refreshments on the lawn of Linnaean Hill\, where William Beckett was born in 1833. \nPlease note that this outdoor event is free\, and no reservation are required. Seating is on a first-come\, first-served basis.  \nSchedule  \n1:00 to 2:30pm: Conversation at Picnic Grove #1\, Rock Creek Park\n \n2:30 to 4:00pm: Exhibit and Reception at Klingle Mansion \nDirections\, Parking\, and Public Transportation \nPicnic Grove #1: Picnic Grove #1 is near the intersection of Tilden Street NW and Beach Drive. There are parking lots and street parking nearby.\n \nKlingle Mansion: There is limited parking at Klingle Mansion\, 3545 Williamsburg Ln NW\, Washington\, DC. Please note that the building is not open to the public. \nAccessibility: There is accessible parking at Picnic Grove #1 and at Klingle Mansion. Sign language interpretation will be provided by Interpreting Sign: World.\n \nPublic Transportation: Picnic Grove #1 is a 20-30 minute walk from the Cleveland Park or Van Ness-UDC exits on the Red Line. DESCRIPTION:This day-long celebration of art and community returns to Peirce Mill this June! Join us for free workshops taught by local artists–or borrow some art supplies and find a quiet spot to draw in Rock Creek Creek Park. Already have an easel and paints? The Washington Studio School will also be organizing a landscape meet-up at Peirce Mill that day.  Please click here for more information about the landscape meet-up.  \nSaturday\, June 10\, 10:00am to 4:00pm.  \nRain date:  Sunday\, June 11\, 10:00am to 4:00pm. \n\n\nWORKSHOP SCHEDULE \n\nPlease click here to register for a free workshop taught by a local artist in Rock Creek Park! \n\n\nCyanotypes at the Mill\nTeaching Artist: Luke Walter\n10:00 to 11:30am\n12:00 to 1:30pm \nA cyanotype is an early photographic process invented in 1842\, just a few years after Peirce Mill was built. In this workshop\, DC artist Luke Walter will demonstrate the cyanotype process\, and show participants how to arrange natural objects and hand-drawn images on specially prepared paper. Then we’ll use sunlight to permanently capture these otherwise ephemeral shadows in subtle shades of blue. \n\nPhotographing Rock Creek Park\nTeaching Artist: Francesca Scott\n10:00 to 11:30am\n2:00 to 3:30pm \nExplore Rock Creek Park with camera in hand\, and learn more about photography\, the creative process\, and the emotional meanings behind the images we create. Professional photographer and teacher Francesca Scott will provide technical guidance on using a smart phone or digital camera to capture the natural world. She’ll cover difficult lighting situations\, proper exposure\, depth of field\, and compositional techniques. Please note: Workshop participants are asked to bring a smart phone or digital camera. We’ll be walking and taking photographs around Peirce Mill; please wear comfortable shoes and let us know if you require any accommodations. \n\nFind Yourself in Nature\nTeaching Artist: Gabriela Méndez\n10:00 to 11:30am\n2:00 to 3:30pm \nCreate a self-portrait where body and nature are combined\, interiorizing the idea that humans\, plants\, animals\, and the environment are all connected. Artist Gabriela Méndez will lead this exploration\, which will begin by using colored pencils to draw\, trace\, or create rubbings of natural objects in Rock Creek Park. These drawings will evolve into self-portraits that express both a sense of identity and a deeper connection with nature. \n\nInking Our World\nTeaching Artist: Caroline MacKinnon\n12:00 to 1:30pm\n2:00 to 3:30pm \nInk is a versatile medium that can create both fine details and sweeping washes and stains. In this experimental and experiental workshop\, artist Caroline MacKinnon will invite participants to zoom in on tiny things – follow the ridges in a leaf\, blades of grass\, the craggy texture of a rock – as well as zoom out for a bigger picture – using different wash techniques to capture the sky\, clouds\, sunlight\, treetops and creek.  Please note: Workshop participants should wear old clothing—ink can permanently stain fabric. \n  \n\n\n\n\nCreate by the Creek is organized by the Friends of Peirce Mill in partnership with the National Park Service and the Washington Studio School. \nThis project is supported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. \n \n\nQuestions? Email Angela Kramer\, \neducation@friendsofpeircemill.org \n\n\n\n\nSAVE THE DATE! \nCreate by the Creek returns to Rock Creek Park this June!\nDate: Saturday\, June 10\, 10:00am to 4:00pm \nRain Date: Sunday\, June 11\, 10:00am to 4:00pm \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:25th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Peirce Mill’s machinery\, drawn by miller Ted Hazen \nFOPM members are invited to\nPeirce Mill for a celebration\nof our 25th Anniversary!\nTwenty five years ago\, a mill volunteer named Richard Abbott founded the Friends of Peirce Mill. Abbott was at the mill when the main shaft broke a few years earlier\, and was determined to repair the wooden machinery. He began the Friends of Peirce Mill in 1997\, and since then we’ve worked alongside the National Park Service in Rock Creek Park to restore and interpret the last working gristmill in Washington\, DC. \nTogether\, we restored corn grinding operations at Peirce Mill in 2011. But there’s still much more to do. The Friends continue working with the National Park Service to preserve an old stone building that has stood beside Rock Creek for almost two centuries\, and to uncover new stories about Peirce Mill’s long history. \nFOPM members: Please join us on\nWednesday\, November 9\nfrom 5:00 to 7:00pm\nfor seasonal comestibles\, cider\, and other libations.\nFeaturing fruit brandies from\nSang Froid Distilling in Hyattsville\, Maryland\nNot a member? Click here to become a Friend of Peirce Mill\nRSVP: FOPM members will receive a link to register.\nQuestions? Contact Angela Kramer\, education@friendsofpeircemill.org\n\nThe Friends of Peirce Mill and Rock Creek Park worked together to restore grinding operations at the mill in 2011.
