In this workshop\, DC artist Luke Walter will demonstrate the cyanotype process\, and show participants how to arrange natural objects and hand-drawn images on specially prepared paper. Then we’ll use sunlight to permanently capture these otherwise ephemeral shadows in subtle shades of blue. \n\nPhotographing Rock Creek Park\nTeaching Artist: Francesca Scott\n10:00 to 11:30am\n2:00 to 3:30pm \nExplore Rock Creek Park with camera in hand\, and learn more about photography\, the creative process\, and the emotional meanings behind the images we create. Professional photographer and teacher Francesca Scott will provide technical guidance on using a smart phone or digital camera to capture the natural world. She’ll cover difficult lighting situations\, proper exposure\, depth of field\, and compositional techniques. Please note: Workshop participants are asked to bring a smart phone or digital camera. We’ll be walking and taking photographs around Peirce Mill; please wear comfortable shoes and let us know if you require any accommodations. \n\nFind Yourself in Nature\nTeaching Artist: Gabriela Méndez\n10:00 to 11:30am\n2:00 to 3:30pm \nCreate a self-portrait where body and nature are combined\, interiorizing the idea that humans\, plants\, animals\, and the environment are all connected. Artist Gabriela Méndez will lead this exploration\, which will begin by using colored pencils to draw\, trace\, or create rubbings of natural objects in Rock Creek Park. These drawings will evolve into self-portraits that express both a sense of identity and a deeper connection with nature. \n\nInking Our World\nTeaching Artist: Caroline MacKinnon\n12:00 to 1:30pm\n2:00 to 3:30pm \nInk is a versatile medium that can create both fine details and sweeping washes and stains. DESCRIPTION:Peirce Mill’s machinery\, drawn by miller Ted Hazen \nFOPM members are invited to\nPeirce Mill for a celebration\nof our 25th Anniversary!\nTwenty five years ago\, a mill volunteer named Richard Abbott founded the Friends of Peirce Mill. Abbott was at the mill when the main shaft broke a few years earlier\, and was determined to repair the wooden machinery. He began the Friends of Peirce Mill in 1997\, and since then we’ve worked alongside the National Park Service in Rock Creek Park to restore and interpret the last working gristmill in Washington\, DC. \nTogether\, we restored corn grinding operations at Peirce Mill in 2011. But there’s still much more to do. DESCRIPTION:FIRST MILLING DAY CANCELED\nDue to a recently identified safety issue\, and out of an abundance of caution\, Rock Creek Park regrets they will not be running the Mill this weekend. The gears will be still\, but the Mill will nevertheless be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\, with volunteers and park rangers on hand to provide interpretation. The park will resolve the issue and get the Mill running again soon. \nBUT IT WILL STILL BE SPRING IN ROCK CREEK PARK!\nFrom noon to 3:00pm\, our friends from the Rock Creek Conservancy will join us for family-friendly games and activities to celebrate warm weather\, spring blooms\, and the Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup. \nAnd at noon\, the Rock Creek Morris Women will dance at Peirce Mill for the first time since 2019. \nBring a picnic lunch and join us for a day of spring fun!

In October 1921\, a neighbor’s racist complaints led to the cancelation of Sewell’s contract to run the teahouse. \nA century later\, the Friends of Peirce Mill worked with the National Park Service and students from Howard University to learn more about Hattie Sewell and to create a short film about her life and times. DESCRIPTION:Join Rock Creek Park\, Rock Creek Conservancy\, LINK Strategic Partners\, and the Friends of Peirce Mill for a virtual discussion about the history of race in Washington\, DC with Chocolate City co-author Chris Myers Asch. Tracing D.C.’s massive transformations — from a sparsely inhabited plantation society into a diverse metropolis\, from a center of the slave trade to the nation’s first black-majority city\, from “Chocolate City” to “Latte City.” Asch will offer an engaging narrative peppered with unforgettable characters\, a history of deep racial division but also one of hope\, resilience\, and interracial cooperation. \nThe talk (moderated interview) will be followed by small group facilitated discussions of how our experiences today have been shaped by the past. \nThis event is part of a series of programs that will help to explore the topic of race and create a space for sustained dialogue in which we can wrestle with the legacy of Rock Creek Park as a dividing line between communities in our city. \nReading the book is encouraged but not required to learn from the program.
