SUMMARY:Virtual Hattie Sewell Film Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Please join Friends of Peirce Mill online for a premiere of the new film about Hattie Sewell\, an African American woman who ran the teahouse at Peirce Mill exactly 100 years ago. In October 1921\, a neighbor’s racist complaints led to the cancelation of Sewell’s contract to run the teahouse. \nA century later\, the Friends of Peirce Mill worked with the National Park Service and students from Howard University to learn more about Hattie Sewell and to create a short film about her life and times. This event will build off the earlier program in the series exploring the intersection of race and history in Rock Creek Park. \nThis event is free\, but reservations are required. \nREGISTER HERE\nThe virtual premiere will begin with a brief introduction on Zoom. Participants will be given a link to watch the 30-minute film on YouTube. Afterwards\, we’ll return to Zoom for questions and answers. \n  \nThis project was supported by a grant from HumanitiesDC as part of the “Humanities Grant Program\,” an initiative funded by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

SUMMARY:Hattie Sewell Film Premiere
DESCRIPTION:The Hattie Sewell Film Premiere has been re-scheduled for Friday\, October 22! \nThis outdoor\, socially-distant film screening is free\, but reservations are required.  \nScreening 1: 5:45-7:15 pm  Click here to reserve. \nScreening 2: 7:30-9:00pm  Click here to reserve. \nThe 30-minute film will be shown during two separate screenings on Friday\, October 22. The first group will be welcomed at Peirce Mill starting at 6:00 for a 6:45 showing. The second group is asked to arrive after 7:30 for an 8:15 screening.  \n\n\n\nWho Was Hattie Sewell? \nIn the summer of 1920\, an African American woman named Hattie Sewell was awarded a contract to run the teahouse at Peirce Mill. She paid a monthly rent of $45 and increased business by two hundred percent. \nBut a prominent neighbor\, E.S. Newman\, complained that Peirce Mill had become “a rendezvous for colored people\, soon developing into a nuisance.” According to Rock Creek Park’s Administrative History\, there were no other complaints about Sewell’s establishment. Nevertheless\, her contract was terminated in October 1921. \nOne hundred years later\, the Friends of Peirce Mill are working with the National Park Service and Howard University to learn more about Hattie Sewell and to create a short film about her life and times. \nFor more information\, please contact Angela Kramer\, education@friendsofpeircemill.org \n  \nThis project was supported by a grant from HumanitiesDC as part of the “Humanities Grant Program\,” an initiative funded by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Chocolate City with Chris Myers Asch
DESCRIPTION:Join Rock Creek Park\, Rock Creek Conservancy\, LINK Strategic Partners\, and the Friends of Peirce Mill for a virtual discussion about the history of race in Washington\, DC with Chocolate City co-author Chris Myers Asch. Tracing D.C.’s massive transformations — from a sparsely inhabited plantation society into a diverse metropolis\, from a center of the slave trade to the nation’s first black-majority city\, from “Chocolate City” to “Latte City.” Asch will offer an engaging narrative peppered with unforgettable characters\, a history of deep racial division but also one of hope\, resilience\, and interracial cooperation. \nThe talk (moderated interview) will be followed by small group facilitated discussions of how our experiences today have been shaped by the past. \nThis event is part of a series of programs that will help to explore the topic of race and create a space for sustained dialogue in which we can wrestle with the legacy of Rock Creek Park as a dividing line between communities in our city. \nReading the book is encouraged but not required to learn from the program. A link to the virtual meeting space will be sent to all registered participants before the event. \nREGISTER HERE \nPlease email info@rockcreekconservancy.org for any questions.
